June Bang Ph.D.

Research Question: TBA

June earned her H.B.Sc in Neuroscience and Cell & Molecular Biology from the University of Toronto. As an undergraduate research student, she developed a strong interest in circuit neuroscience, which led her to pursue doctoral training under the mentorship of Dr. Junchul Kim.

She earned her Ph.D. in Cell and Systems Biology from the University of Toronto, where she investigated the functional connectivity between the hippocampus and hypothalamus. Using circuit manipulation tools combined with large-scale rodent behavioral characterization, she identified a critical hippocampal-hypothalamic circuit necessary for stress endocrine responses and fear memory recall. Her work provided key insights into the circuit mechanisms underlying PTSD and anxiety disorders and was recognized with the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and a departmental award.

As a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Li-Huei Tsai's laboratory at MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, her research shifted toward translational neuroscience and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) therapeutics. She explored vulnerable cell types and circuits in AD, investigating Reelin-associated signaling in primary neuronal cultures. Additionally, she studied the effects of A11, a small molecule that modulates PU.1 activity in microglia to suppress neuroinflammation while preserving essential microglial functions.

She developed a deeper interest in neuroimmune mechanisms and therapeutic approaches for neurological disorders through this work.
